Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
