Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
