EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
