Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
